Today’s Special: Life Changing Experiences
The culinary approach to leadership & life skills
F BITES offers a variety of amazing programs designed to combat the problems facing today’s youth and chronically unemployed adults. Read on to learn about the nutritional education and vocational training programs offered by F BITES and how they may help your school, agency or organization.
The Re-Entry Program is designed specifically for prisoners looking to completely turn their lives around. We work with municipalities to positively affect these people who range in age from as young as 15 to 75 years old. We teach the participants soft skills like looking someone in the eye, shaking hands and even pulling their pants up. We then use culinary instruction to teach them the hard skills of teamwork, reliance and more so they are prepared when they are released from prison.
It’s important that we make an impact on participants each and every time we are there because we may not see the same person twice during the program. When they exit prison, we offer a resume package for them to take to employers to help with the job search process. We also work to get individuals hired at local restaurants and hotels.
Our Saturday Academy is offered at several schools throughout Buffalo every Saturday during the school year. It’s designed for students and their parents so they can experience the F BITES program together as a cooperative effort. We focus on providing instruction and education on designing and preparing healthy, nutritious meals and giving them the knowledge and skill to make these meals in their own homes.
Workforce Development Program
Developed and run in conjunction with Niagara University, the Workforce Development Program focuses on teaching the soft and hard skills needed in today’s workforce, using food as the syllabus. Today’s employers expect a certain level of competence, behavior and attitude. We work to develop students’ capacity in each of these areas to ensure our students are fully prepared for the job market.
One of the agencies we work with is the Niagara Global Tourism Institute (NGTI). F BITES walks participants through the process and offers a resume package to help graduates secure employment. When a student graduates from F BITES, they know they are employable. In fact, three of our recent graduates are currently employed at businesses within Erie and Niagara counties.
After School Enrichment
The After School Enrichment is an educational nutrition class designed for students in grades five through 12 and runs from 3-5 p.m. Avoiding the traditional lecture model, F BITES combines various techniques, including hands-on learning, peer support, guest speakers and learning modification to introduce healthier eating habits and practices to youth at crucial developmental academic and vocational stage.
Participants alternate between the roles of head cook, food servers, speakers, clean-up and participants each week. All students learn about the ingredients in the food, how it is prepared, where it can be purchased, and why it is good for you. After the meal, students participate in physical activities and spend time on homework.
